There are many different types of dental sedation. It starts with oral medication, then inhalation, IV sedation, or general anesthesia.
What do oral surgeons use for sedation?
Oral surgeons typically use IV sedation.
What can I expect during oral sedation?
During oral sedation, you can expect to be calm and comfortable, a little bit of drowsiness, and just very relaxed.
Do you need sedation for tooth extraction?
Whether or not you need sedation for tooth extraction is a decision that you have to discuss with your surgeon. It really depends on your anxiety level.
Are you awake under sedation?
If you want to know whether or not you're awake during sedation, that really depends on the level of sedation. Deep sedation, no, you're not awake. Conscious sedation or by giving you oral medication, you will be awake but very still, calm, and comfortable.

Possible side effects of sedation dentistry include dizziness, drowsiness, and headache, but these are all short-term and they're really rare actually.
