What Is Chin Surgery?
In terms of facial anatomy, the chin is one of the most prominent contributors to the balance of the face. The chin and jawline, though not always considered when examining the aesthetics of the face, are an important part of the profile that can be enhanced through surgery. Chin augmentation, or mentoplasty, can help to achieve facial balance through the use of implants or bone surgery (sliding genioplasty). Please note that Dr. Jamali only prefers to do sliding genioplasty, since it is a more natural and longer-lasting procedure.
Types Of Chin Surgery
Chin Narrowing
If a person feels that their chin is too wide, sliding genioplasty can help them achieve a narrower or pointier look.
Chin Expansion
Narrow chin can be widened by sliding genioplasty to give a more natural look. An osteotomy is made in the middle of the chin and the segments are pushed outwards. They are then connected by a plate.
Chin Advancement
Weak chin can produce a convex facial angle. Dr. Jamali will measure the facial angle on your X-ray and plan accordingly. The amount of advancement is different on each person. The advantage of sliding genioplasty over implant is that it will actually pull the neck muscles that are attached to chin forward. This action tightens those muscles and creates a beautiful neck.
How Do You Prepare For Corrective Chin Surgery?
First and foremost you must be in good health to undergo any elective surgery. Many of our patients are not from New York City. We treat patients from all over the world. Dr. Jamali offers an initial mini consultation over SKYPE to discuss the needs and requests of the patient. The patient must then be seen for a full consultation in the office prior to the surgery date. During that appointment, X-rays and photographs are obtained. The case is then discussed in detail with the patient.
Why Is Chin Surgery Performed?
Chin surgery is a cosmetic surgery to enhance profile. Proper chin position and shape balance the face as a whole. For example, a weak chin makes the nose appear larger. It has been shown that shape and position of the chin, can affect a person’s self confidence.
What Can You Expect During Chin Augmentation Surgery?
Prior to surgery, which takes place in our accredited surgical center, you will be greeted by our registered nurse and board certified anesthesiologists.
Chin surgery can be done under IV sedation or general anesthesia. Dr. Jamali prefers general anesthesia since it is more comfortable for the patient. chin surgery takes about 45 minutes to perform. Once surgery is finished, you will be awakened by the anesthesiologist and allowed to fully recover. This takes about 3-4 hours. You will then be escorted to your home or hotel room by a companion.
What Is The Followup And Recovery Like For Chin Surgery?
Immediately following the surgery, special tapes are applied on the chin area. These tapes may be removed after 3-4 days. Dr. Jamali would like to follow up with his patients 10 days after the surgery. During this period, the patient must stay on a liquid (Purée) diet. Exercise, smoking, and alcohol consumption are prohibited. More strenuous activity should be put off for the first few weeks. By the sixth week, most swelling should have subsided and the improved balance of the face will be noticeable. There is always going to be some tightness around the lip and chin for the first 2-3 weeks. After 10 days, the swelling is not detected by the public eye. Therefore, patients are told to rest for 5 days prior to returning to work.

What Are The Potential Risks?
Chin surgery, if done by an experienced surgeon, can have minimum risks. The main risk that can occur with any type of chin augmentation is numbness of the lower lip and chin. Thankfully, in our practice, this is extremely rare.
Are There Other Related Treatments To Chin Surgery?
Occasionally, patients require corrective jaw surgery as well, but choose to have chin surgery alone. Chin reduction/advancement is known as an aesthetic procedure but done in tandem with other procedures. This can be discussed in detail during your consultation with Dr. Jamali.
